Well Known Ignition Issues
If you have never experienced a problem with your car ignition then it is likely that you do not know what type of problems can occur.
The ignition is the source of power to the cars spark plugs. This power produces combustion to the engine. Once the ignition switch is turned on, the coil receives the power it needs to make the spark plugs work.
Ignition trouble isn’t uncommon. In fact, we have highlighted some of the most common ignition problems that we are asked to help with.
Worn Out Spark Plugs: When you have worn out spark plugs they need to be repaired or replaced right away.
Dead Battery: This is a common issue that many motorists often overlook. When your vehicle won’t start, it would be wise to lift the hood to see if the battery is the reason why it won’t start. There could be a problem with the alternator. The alternator problem should be taken care of and then the battery can be recharged. This should take care of the problem, thus allowing you to get back on the road.
Faulty Switch: If the ignition system is sparked and your car still will not start, we might be able to track it back to a problem with your ignition switch. The best way to have this problem taken care of is to make sure you get the switch replaced.
The things that we have listed are the most common ignition issues that mechanics are called on to fix. There may also come a time when you are unable to effectively remove the key from the ignition. This could pose another problem. However, the good news is that you don’t usually have to contact a mechanic or locksmith to fix this problem. Here are some simple steps that you might be able to take to get back on the road again.
When the car is turned to the ON position:
- Evaluate the vehicle gear: You have to have the gear turned to the PARK position if you want the car to turn on. It will not turn on if the car is not in gear.
- Evaluate the dashboard: Even when you think the car is in the PARK position, it may not be. Check your cars dashboard to make sure that the gear is in the right position.
- Loosen the key: Wiggling the key back and forth when it is inside the ignition could help you to loosen it up if it is stuck and will not easily come out. You don’t want to get it out by applying too much force. Gently wiggle it back and forth. Don’t make the situation worse by pulling it out.
When the car is turned to the OFF position:
- Check the battery: You might not think that this is something that anyone should have to tell you but you would be surprised to find out how many people don’t do this. This is one of the first things that an auto mechanic might do when they discover that you’re having trouble with your vehicle ignition. You may have a dead battery that needs to be replaced.
- Look at the key position: When you are trying to use an old key, it might not enter the ignition properly. If you have a key that continues getting stuck, stop using the key and replace it with another one.
- Loosen up the key – Gently wiggle the key without too much force. If you’re in a hurry, your first instinct might be to just snatch the key out of the ignition. STOP! Think before you react so that you don’t make the situation any worse than it already is. By wiggling the key gently, you will be able to loosen it so that it easily slides out.
